Where is chiropractic medicine in your life, in the lives of other Easley folks? Let’s look at where it fits in others’ lives for spine care, back pain relief, and neck pain relief at Young Chiropractic
SPINAL MANIPULATION IS RECOMMENDED
Chiropractic spinal manipulation is recommended for at least 12 weeks before referral for spine surgery for lumbar disc herniation. (1) The American Medical Association, the American Pain Society, the American College of Physicians and Harvard Medical School all state spinal manipulation and chiropractic are first line care for low back pain. (2) Did you know that? Probably not because it takes numerous years for such innovative, proven models to trickle down to common knowledge. Some people (not our Easley chiropractic clients!) think chiropractors are quacks when actually chiropractors are non-surgical back spine specialists. Your Easley chiropractor at Young Chiropractic certainly is the Easley back pain specialist!
Young Chiropractic welcomes back pain, neck pain and spine pain patients to our Easley chiropractic practice, particularly the more difficult cases! For example, patients who experience recurrent lumbar disc herniation reportedly respond to non-surgical care and evade the need for reoperation. (3) Reports say that from 9 to 33% of people receive spinal manipulation for pain and disability and 98% of those people see chiropractors. (4)
DEMAND FOR CHIROPRACTIC GROWS
The demand for chiropractic spine care is increasing. A majority of neurosurgeons consider a minimum duration of 8 to 12 weeks of radicular arm pain is the best timing before performing surgery for cervical spine disc herniation. (5) What does such a Easley neck pain patient do? Chiropractic care at Young Chiropractic is a possibility for pain relief. Another similar study found that no conclusion is drawn as to whether surgical or nonsurgical treatment is superior for individuals with lumbar spine degeneration of discs triggering the condition termed stenosis. To top it off, a high rate of adverse effects is stated in three of five surgical groups while no side effects were described for any of the conservative treatment options. (6)
SECOND OPINION IS VALUABLE
A second opinion before spine surgery is a sound idea. A study of 137 patients recommended to have lumbar spine fusion at one institution found on second opinion at a multidisciplinary clinic that 58% did not require surgery but rather non-surgical treatment. Of those found to need surgery, the type of surgery was changed for 28% of the patients. (7) Chiropractic spinal manipulation as used at Young Chiropractic has vast success in treating low back and neck pain and leg and arm pain. Young Chiropractic uses a spinal manipulation technique known as Cox Technic Flexion Distraction Decompression which incorporates placing the spine under distraction to decompress nerves allowing normal spine motion to return. An example is a paper reporting flexion–distraction spinal manipulation used to relieve an L4-L5 disk extrusion causing L5 nerve root radiculopathy in a 40 year old naval officer. (8)
MIND-BODY PRACTITIONERS (INCLUDING CHIROPRACTORS) HELP
A study of 674 emergency room adult visits revealed that 500 (74.2%) patients had visited at least one mind body practitioner (MBP), defined as a chiropractor, acupuncturist, yoga, or meditation practitioner. People seeking such care were significantly younger and more probable to have private health insurance. 33% saw a chiropractor. Users were significantly more likely to believe that MBP prevented illness, treated illness, and was safe, more successful than prescription medicines, supportive of prescription medications, and more holistic.
