Easley Back Pain Relief via Chiropractic Treatment Plan of Manipulation and Exercise

February 28, 2023

A new clinical trial is starting that will study the effectiveness of a 6-week specific rehabilitation program blending education and exercises on walking capacity in those who have lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication. Young Chiropractic knows these Easley spinal pain conditions quite well…and delivers a relieving treatment plan of Cox® Technic spinal manipulation and mobilization with exercise!

The aim of this preposed study is to analyze whether adding an exercise program to an educational program can enhance walking capacity in those who have lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication. Being a randomized controlled clinical trial, 60 participants will be randomly assigned to either the control group or the intervention group. The intervention group will receive an educational program plus an exercise program, while the control group will only receive the educational program. The primary outcome measure is walking capacity, while the secondary outcome measures are pain intensity, disability level, and quality of life. (1) Young Chiropractic knows our Easley spinal stenosis patients are quite concerned about these outcomes!

Lumbar spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication is a condition that causes narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back region, which then puts pressure on the nerves. This can lead to pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs and buttocks. In really bad cases, it can also make walking quite difficult. The condition is a very common one in people over the age of 50. These are just the people in Easley who need to keep (or at least begin) exercising!

The particular exercises that will be employed in this study are made to improve walking capacity by stretching and strengthening the muscles surrounding the spine. The hope is that by doing these exercises regularly, patients will experience less pain and disability and experience an improved quality of life.

The control group in this trial will only get an educational program about their condition and how to control it. While education is important, it is not usually enough on its own to provide significant relief from symptoms. That is why the addition of an exercise program is so important. It includes the back pain patient in his or her relief!
