A cyst. What does that make you think of? For some Easley back pain sufferers, it would be a hint to their pain’s source. But the diagnosis of a synovial cyst as the reason for pain is a curious one. Back pain and leg pain may develop from a synovial cyst which is where Easley chiropractic care at Young Chiropractic comes in to help. Easley chiropractic care with the Cox® Technic is shown to help decrease back pain and related leg pain because of a synovial cyst without Easley back surgery.
SYNOVIAL CYST FACTS
First, let us discuss what synovial cysts are. Synovial cysts are uncommon lesions affiliated with facet degeneration and commonly found in the lumbar spine at L4-S1. (1) 33% to 40% of synovial cysts are linked with degenerative spondylolisthesis and instability of the affected joint. (2,3) Synovial cysts may trigger sciatica/leg pain. (4) Synovial cysts appear in females mostly in their sixth decade of life, resulting in radicular pain and neurological deficits. These cysts are frequently seen at L4-5 which is also the site of maximum mobility in the lumbar spine. MRI is the diagnostic instrument of choice as it shows the consistency of the cyst (more or less fluid). (5) When synovial cysts seem lighter on MRI T2 images, they are likely more fluid filled and less likely gelatinous or calcified, making them possibly easier to reduce. (6) Synovial cysts have been reported to disappear particularly if the cyst wall is not calcified. (7) Young Chiropractic works to help Easley back pain sufferers dealing with synovial cyst get rid of them, too.
SYNOVIAL CYST CAUSES
Wilby et al describe a channel that joins the facet joint capsule with the ligamentum flavum, the area where the synovial cysts form. At surgery for these cysts, they found that fragments of articular cartilage and bone were in the walls of the channels in 89% of the cysts. This debris blocks the channel from draining and triggers granulation tissue and scar formation probably starting synovial cyst formation. (8) Young Chiropractic works on scar tissue to enhance the spine’s fluidity.
SYNOVIAL CYST TREATMENT
Conservative treatment of lumbar spine synovial cysts is recommended as some tend to disappear without surgery. (9) Conservative treatment is practical. If the cyst does not respond, then surgery is an option. (5) Cox® Technic has a history of conservative care relief for synovial cysts. (10) As implemented at Young Chiropractic, Cox® Technic was effective at relief when an epidural steroid injection did not. (11) In another case, a 75 year old man with back and leg pain and a synovial cyst treated for 3 months/16 visits experienced 80% relief. (12) Cox® Technic at Young Chiropractic is relieving for numerous Easley back pain sufferers with synovial cysts.
